Mahat's Story: This Experience Changed How I See My Future

Before Larita, I wasn’t sure what I wanted my future to look like. Now I have a much clearer idea of the kind of work I want to do and the steps I need to take to get there.
Larita Academy surpassed the impact of any other government-founded academy or youth program I’ve attended. In just three days, I absorbed transformative knowledge that has the potential to reshape my life, building on the clarity I had just begun to find.
From there, the connections I made and the knowledge I gained were huge for me. But honestly, the moment that stands out most was meeting Anita and being able to thank her with a hug. She has a heart of gold.
Later in the program, one of the most important lessons I learned came from Larry’s advice that education doesn’t just come from paying for a degree. It can happen while you’re out in the world. That message stayed with me. I’m currently working on opening a fitness centre for people from disadvantaged backgrounds who often neglect their health. I’d love to present the idea to the Larita team and get feedback.
"I’ve stayed connected to Larita by joining the Alumni Advisory Group because I want to help shape the future of the Academy. As a former refugee, I’ve lived through adversity and believe I can offer ideas that reflect the needs of young people."
I’ve also run youth activities, delivered sports programs, and supported people transitioning off the streets into housing. These experiences have taught me how to communicate clearly, listen, and support people with compassion. My personal motto is to do one good deed a day, something small that brings someone joy.
Activities like the mushroom challenge helped me connect with people I might not have otherwise talked to. I’d love to see more of those types of group challenges that bring everyone together.
I strongly believe in myself and what I can achieve now, and I want others to feel the same. I’m especially interested in opportunities in retail and fashion because the retail team really inspired me. If you get the opportunity to take part in Larita Academy, take it, it’s something you won’t forget.
"I believe in myself more after Larita. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I know this is only the beginning. The Academy gave me confidence, direction, and a sense of purpose that will stay with me wherever I go."
