Sizdiwe’s Story: Building Confidence, Friendships and a Future

Sizdiwe | Class of 2025

When I first applied for a scholarship at Larita Academy, I did it because it felt like the right step for my future. I want to be an entrepreneur, and Larita seemed like a powerful first move. I knew I would be challenged, inspired, and surrounded by people who believed in my potential. All I had to do was show up and listen, so I applied.

The program delivered more than I expected. I valued the sessions, workshops, panels and mentoring, but what really made my day were the friendships I formed.

"Sitting next to my new friends during the sessions brought a peaceful feeling. I came to really appreciate these connections both during and after Larita, as I still stay in touch with them."

Those friendships gave me a sense of belonging and reminded me that success is not just about knowledge or skills, but about the people you walk alongside.

One lesson that continues to guide me is the idea of finding your tribe. That session made me reflect on who I surround myself with and why. I realised that passion shapes my path, and that I want to walk alongside people who value being part of a team in life as much as at work. I also learned that failing is not the end. Trying again is still progress, but giving up is not an option.

Another powerful moment came during the “Bringing Brands to Life” session. We had to design a T-shirt using words and magazine cut-outs. I cut an image of calm water and paired it with the phrase “faith over fear.” That phrase stays with me every day. It reminds me that even in overwhelming moments, I can still move forward. It was also the first time I truly stopped to think about how I want to show up in the world.

That awareness has shaped me deeply. The shyness I carried before Larita is gone. I have found my voice.

I am more confident about putting myself out there, even when rejection is part of the process. I have learned to step into opportunities, balance relationships, and manage myself in ways that prepare me for full-time work.

One turning point came on Day One, listening to Coach Scott’s life story. His challenges and transformation made me believe that if he could persevere, then so could I. It reminded me that no matter the situation, I have to show up for myself and those I care about, because no one else can do it for me.

"Attending Larita was the missing piece of the puzzle, I am who I need to be, and that’s how it’s meant to be."

Since graduating, I have become more confident and more open. I completed my coursework, looked for work with a clearer sense of direction, and learned how to balance my personal and social life. I have been more vocal with my youth worker and more willing to ask for help, which has helped me grow in ways I never imagined. I have printed out my resume, visited agencies, and spoken with agents about their journeys so I can better understand the steps I need to take for my own.

Larita Academy gave me friendships, lessons and self-belief. It taught me to embrace my own agency, care for my mental health, and trust my future. Most of all, it restored my faith in humanity, showing me that there are people who care and want to help simply because they believe in others. For me, that care has been life-changing.
